Human History: Grade 7 State Education Standards

The following table lists examples of activities and the California state standards that each supports.

Note: This table is only a sampling of activities and cannot be used as a menu to select activities. Each YI educator develops his or her curriculum differently, taking into account the particular needs of different groups. It is therefore impossible to predict exactly which standards your students might encounter in a day.

Group challenge: cross the flooded riverStudents work together to cross an area on the ground that symbolizes the flooded Merced River. Each student may only touch the ground twice.   1, 2, 5, 6  
Blackberry removalStudents learn about invasive species, and the history of their introduction to the park's ecosystem. The group participates in a resource management project aimed at eradicating invasive species from sections of the Yosemite Valley.   1, 2, 5, 6  
Exploration of the Indian villageAn inquiry-based activity in which students generate questions about American Indian life and then explore the Indian village looking for answers.7. c     
Q & A with museum experttd> Students meet with an interpretive ranger at the Indian museum to ask questions regarding Miwok lifestyles and traditions. Listening & speaking: 1.1    
A pioneer's storyUsing gravestones in the cemetery, students write a brief fictional story about the life one of the deceased. After sharing the imagined stories, students will hear about each pioneer's real life. Written and Oral: 1.1, 1.6, 1.7

Eco artStudents study Andy Goldsworthy's artwork. Then, each student creates eco art and shares creations with the group.     2.1, 2.5
Closing activityStudents share ways in which they might make a difference.      
HikingStudents walk ~3 miles from Curry Village to Yosemite Village and Cook's Meadow, covering varied terrain along the valley floor.   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
