A Year with TEAM
This program has helped me unlock my leadership potential to help
the community. I'm applying to nine colleges to pursue my dream of
becoming a high school teacher, one of the most needed leadership
positions in California. -TEAM intern 2004-2006
The TEAM internship begins with a 7-day residential leadership training held at Headlands Institute, where students learn about natural science, ecology, and environmental issues affecting both natural and urban settings. Participants learn first hand about coastal ecology and develop outdoor skills through hiking and an overnight camping trip. Interactive workshops introduce environmental education concepts, teaching, and public speaking skills while exploring participant's communities. Communication and group facilitation skills development round out this amazing teambuilding experience and prepare interns for the exciting year ahead.
TEAM Interns lead art and science-based games and activities with our elementary school participants during after-school hours once a week. Participants learn and practice teaching techniques and hone public speaking skills while inspiring children, adults, and the next generation of youth leaders. Midway through the year, TEAM travels to Yosemite National Park and Yosemite Institute, Headlands Institute's sister campus. This winter weekend adventure and leadership retreat features snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and Yosemite Valley exploration.

Because of TEAM, I stepped out of of the box, went beyond my comfort zone and (now) view the world in a whole new way. -TEAM Intern, 2006-07
During spring break in April, TEAM interns have the opportunity to become paid Coastal Camp counselors, working side by side with our professional educators. Interns learn how to write a cover letter and resume and practice interview skills in preparation for being counselors. During camp, interns help lead fun activities such as brewing tea from native plants, making Japanese fish prints. animal tracking, and scavenger hunts.
In the spring, TEAM members take what they've learned throughout the year back to their home communities through the creation of a community education project. Working with a mentor educator, interns craft an education project to share with 1 or 2 elementary school classrooms of their choice. Past projects have included organizing a school fair and teaching interactive lessons to elementary school students.
Our professional program staff mentor TEAM members year-round. In addition to gaining valuable life skills, TEAM is a gateway to other programs, internships, and scholarships opportunities. Through TEAM, students can complete high school community service requirements. TEAM looks great on college applications, and several students have written college essays on their TEAM experience. In addition, TEAM participants are eligible to receive college credit for participating in the program.
