Safety

Safety is our highest priority at Headlands Institute. Since 1977, we have been a risk management leader in the field of environmental education. We have achieved this strong safety record by:

All teachers at Headlands Institute are First Aid certified.Student supervision
Adults supervise the students at all times.

Trail safety
At the orientation, participants learn how to be safe on the trail. When arriving at a new place or environment, our leaders introduce important new safety guidelines. Field groups follow all park service guidelines and stay on established trails.

First aid training
All field science educators have current certifications in first aid and CPR. Within the first semester of employment, all first aid certifications are upgraded to the Wilderness First Responder level, an 80 hour certification focusing on first aid in more remote locations.

Equipment
Field science educators carry fully stocked first aid kits at all times. First aid kits are also available around campus, including in the dormitories. Educators carry radios in the park and cell phones during trips out of the park to allow communication in case of emergencies. Extra warm and waterproof layers are available to ensure everybody stays warm and dry.Staff is Wilderness First Response certified.

Emergency response
Our staff is available 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies, either in our office or via pager.

Emergency support
A fire station with EMTs on call is located approximately 100 yards from our campus. The National Park Service is also available for emergency assistance. They have a 24-hour emergency dispatch line and park police patrol the national park at all times.

Campus security
All of our buildings are locked at night, including the dormitories.
