Field Trips for 5-Day Programs

Schools which attend Headlands Institute for 5 days may elect to take a field trip in the Bay Area. Four diverse field trips are available to add to your students' experience at minimal to no extra cost. View field trip options as a printable PDF.

Muir Woods

This option is a favorite with many schools and educators. School groups who select this option are transported to a trailhead on Mt. Tamalpais and spend the day hiking down the mountain canyons through diverse ecological systems, including:

The day ends in the beautiful Muir Woods National Monument, and students return to campus via a Headlands Institute shuttle. There are no additional costs for this trip.

 

Students explore the San Francisco Bay in our Call of the Sea program.Bay Explorations

This marine science trip is offered in partnership with Call of the Sea's Bay Explorations program.

Students experience 3 hours of hands-on education aboard a traditional sailing vessel. Aligned with California and federal standards, this program integrates the following topics:

The program is limited to 15 - 33 people total per sail. Larger groups may be able to schedule 2 sails in 1 day or over a few days.

Costs are $28 per student and chaperone, in addition to standard Headlands Institute tuition. Teachers sail for free, and prices subject to change. This option is only available for programs between April and June.

 

School groups may visit Angel Island as part of their 5 day program.

Angel Island

With this trip, hiking groups ride the Angel Island Ferry together from Tiburon to Angel Island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. Then they may:

The Angel Island Immigration Station is currently closed due to restoration work and is scheduled to reopen in early 2009.

The school is responsible for the ferry cost, currently $11.50 per child under age 12 and $13.50 per person for age 12 and over. Prices are subject to change. Additional ferry fees apply for trips longer than 3 hours January through March.

 

 

Group tours Chinatown in San Francisco, California.San Francisco with Hike Across the Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco off-campus days include a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and an exploration of Chinatown. Groups can ride the famed cable cars for $5 more per person.

In Chinatown, each hiking group typically divides into 2 - 3 smaller groups, each one accompanied by an adult. While the focus of the day is exploration of the cultural richness and diversity of San Francisco, students often like to purchase interesting food or a souvenir.

The group meets the bus in Washington Square and is transported back to campus.
